John Gross and Mike Baronavski
(from IAFF's newsletter article in Volume 84, Number 2)
Chattanooga Local 820 member John Gross was recently recognized by the Chattanooga City Council for an act of bravery he performed more than 25 years ago.
On Oct. 10,1974, Gross sat in an Interstate median treating an accident victim. As Gross, then 25 and an EMT, tended to the victim, he saw a tractor-trailer approaching. The truck applied its brakes but skildded out-of-control toward the two men. Gross grabbed the victim and attempted to pull him out of the way. The tractor-trailer slammed into the victim's car, which spun around and hit both men. Fortunately, neither was seriously hurt.
Gross won the Carnegie Award in 1976 for his act of valor. The award was created in 1904 by Andrew Carnegie to recognize heroic acts, and is awarded to people who risk their lives while attempting to save the life of someone else.
However, because the award came in the mail, Gross was never formally recognized. Fellow fire fighters approached Chattanooga Fire Chief Jim Coppinger about the matter and he arranged for the official ceremony.
Congratulations, John!
